The State’s “Do-Nothing” Budget

Posted in Board of Education, General at 8:28 am by Ladyx

As the General Assembly session came to a close without taking any action on adjustments to the second year of the State’s budget, monies for municipalities shrank.

The most important loss to East Hartford is the State’s funding of the Early Reading Success program, valued at just under $ 700,000.  The Board of Education will have to find that money somewhere else.

State Rep. Christopher Stone

Posted in State Elections at 11:15 am by Ladyx

State Representative, 9th Assembly District has formally announced he will not seek reelection this year.  He has served East Hartford well in the past ten years and will be missed.  Being a multi-town representative, only one can wonder which town (East Hartford, Manchester or Glastonbury) will put forth the next candidate.

No Walmart

According to my friends at Exotic, Walmart is not coming to the Silver Lane plaza.  The pet store will still be relocating to the smaller strip mall in June.

Choices

Posted in Economic Development at 6:41 pm by Ladyx

I was unable to attend last night’s TPZ meeting but I did watch it on Channel 5.  I came away from the meeting with one, single observation:

You have a choice - where do you want it?

It seems as though there are three choices: The former Elks Lodge, Prestige Park or the North Meadows.  Plain and simple.

You may not like it, want it, or patronize it; you’re eventually going to get it, because that is the law.

If you support the proposed zoning changes explained last night, the clubs can open in these areas without applying to the TPZ.  I wonder, exactly just how many adult clubs can open in these deisgnated areas.  (I didn’t do the math).  Both of these areas would have significant impact on traffic and quality of life in the surrounding residential areas.

In my opinion, the former Elks Lodge seems to be a perfect location for an adult club.  It is easy off/easy on rte 84 and seems to have little impact on the surrounding residential areas.

Face the facts everyone….you have a choice make….

Missing Report?

Posted in Mayor's Office at 9:56 am by Ladyx

Does anyone know where the Mayor’s report for 2007 is?

I have found the 2006 report:

http://www.ci.east-hartford.ct.us/Public_Documents/EastHartfordCT_Mayor/Mayor%20Year-End%20Report%202006

But have been unable to locate the 2007 report.  Was one issued?

Economic Stimulus

Posted in General at 9:49 am by Ladyx

Soon, those who filed a 2007 tax return will start receiving their economic stimulus payment from the Federal Government that is, if you qualify.  The payments are scheduled to commence in early May and run through July.

Have you considered how you will spend this windfall?  Here are some suggestions:

1.  Make an extra escrow payment to your mortgage company to offset this year’s increase in property taxes.

2.  Fill up your oil tank (home heating fuel is now at $3.999/gal).

3.  Supplement your future gas consumption (gas is now at a record high and rising, I just paid $ 3.559/gal for 87 octane).

4.  Stock up on some consumables for your every day needs (toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, etc).

5.  Pay down some high interest credit cards.

6.  Make a charitable donation - the non-profits are hurting just as much as we are.

7.  Save it.
